Founders' Story

Co-founder JoJo first discovered her love of cake decorating in 2009 while making cakes and cupcakes for friends and family to celebrate birthdays, weddings, graduations, and baby showers. Years later, when her young son donned a tiny apron and joined her in the kitchen, time spent together inspired a simple question: What if families, friends, classmates, coworkers could experience the joy of decorating cakes together without needing a fully stocked kitchen or any decorating skills?

After more than a decade practicing law, JoJo teamed up with her longtime friend and business school colleague Katie to bring that vision to life. Together, they created Cake Hoopla, a place where anyone can experience the fun of DIY cake decorating in a welcoming, encouraging environment.

In September 2023, Cake Hoopla opened its first studio in Tigard, Oregon, just outside Portland. Today, the studio welcomes children, teens, adults, families, schools, community organizations, and businesses from throughout the Portland area for birthday parties, cake-decorating classes, corporate events, Cake Camps, field trips, Open Studio Time, private lessons, and To-Go Party.
